Polymer Optical Fiber POF is a type of optical fiber that uses a polymer material, typically PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate), as the core and cladding. Compared with traditional silica optical fibers, it has several distinct characteristics. One of its notable features is its large core diameter, usually ranging from 0.2 to 2 mm, which makes it easier to couple light sources and detectors, reducing the complexity and cost of connection. Additionally, POF is highly flexible and has good bending performance, allowing it to be bent into small radii without significant loss of optical signal, making it suitable for applications in complex and confined spaces. It also exhibits excellent toughness and impact resistance, being less prone to breakage compared to brittle silica fibers, thus offering better durability in harsh environments. Furthermore, the manufacturing process of POF is relatively simple, with lower production costs, which makes it more economically viable for large-scale applications in areas such as short-distance communication, sensor systems, and consumer electronics.
